POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, invites applications for the position of lecturer in the Chinese language.

We seek applicants with expertise and experience in teaching Chinese as a second/foreign language. The candidate(s) will be expected to teach the intermediate-level Chinese language courses in non-heritage and heritage Mandarin language courses for Fall 2022 (2 courses and 3 sections), Winter 2023 (2 courses and 3 sections), and any other teaching needs that may arise. This workload includes supervising a teaching assistant for Friday drills.

Salary is based on UC salary scales and depends on qualifications. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship.

The Department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service as appropriate to the position. QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

MA in Chinese language pedagogy, applied linguistics, or a related field, at time of application.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

• Two years of experience in higher education, preferably in the United States, teaching Chinese language courses (elementary through advanced levels), and evidence of effective teaching.
• Native or near-native fluency in both Mandarin Chinese and English.

Preferred qualifications

• Preference for candidates who have experience in teaching the intermediate level Chinese language courses in both heritage and non-heritage streams in North America;
• Preference for candidates who have experience mentoring and training TAs.
