Chikako Shinagawa specializes in Japanese linguistics and language pedagogy. She started her career as an English as a second language teacher and served as a trainer for new ESL teachers. Before coming to UCSB, she taught Japanese at the University of California, Irvine and Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Japan. She is the co-author of Genki: An integrated Course in Elementary Japanese textbook series which is widely used in many countries. She conducts workshops related to promote networking among fellow Japanese teachers throughout the US and abroad. Her current work is on developing supplementary materials for the Genki textbook series and developing a genki-online site to support teachers and students.
